Preceptors’ Experiences Training Public Health Interns in Remote Workplace Settings

Background: The discourse around COVID-19 related challenges to classroom instruction has been highly visible, but little published on learning experiences outside the that prepare students work in “real world.” Method: We interviewed five Master of Public Health internship preceptors about their experience 2020 with student interns formulate pertinent survey questions distribute a larger sample. Our questionnaire included closed- and open-ended regarding attributes skills shaped success internship. Data were collected from internships sites one midwestern university. Results: Nearly all 26 responded our supervised fully remote internships. Internship academic centers, private companies, non-profits, health systems, others. Self-motivation, flexibility organizational considered key essential succeed Being uncomfortable an online environment or being hesitant passive made challenging. Preceptors reported developed different compared previous years, notably, those working environment, intrapersonal like resilience, technical skills, such as spatial analysis. Conclusion: As modes continue evolve, will need learn adapt what it takes support develop relevant for hybrid public environments. In meantime, offering clear communication, support, normalizing cultures may enhance interns’ ability engage while maintaining necessary make success.
